What stone size fits an 80×100mm gabion mesh?
Fill stone should be larger than the mesh opening — typically 100–250mm well-graded hard rock, with at least the outer faces hand-packed. Never use stone smaller than about 1.5× the smaller mesh dimension or it will migrate through the basket.
Galvanized, Galfan or PVC-coated gabions — which should I buy?
Heavy galvanized suits dry retaining structures. Galfan (Zn-5%Al) roughly doubles coating life and is the default for river and coastal works. PVC over galvanized adds a sealed barrier for polluted or salt water and permanent immersion.
What is the difference between a gabion box and a mattress?
Boxes (0.5–1m high) stack to build gravity retaining walls. Mattresses are thin, wide units (0.17–0.3m high) that blanket river beds, banks and channel linings against scour. Both arrive folded flat with lacing wire for site assembly.
